New Mops&Mobs demo dropped (v0.2.0)

After a very long silence we finally released a new-ish demo of Mops&Mobs! While the story and level of the demo is largely the same as before, there's now combat gameplay. It's a non-demanding card "mini"-game, and like everything it's still a WIP (and probably will be until release). We'd like to know what you think of it, so with this new demo we also added a new feedback form, but of course you can also write in the comments.

Here's an excerpt of the changelog - only things relevant to the demo are listed:

  • upgraded game engine to Godot 4.4.1
  • added saving and loading (only one saveslot for now)
  • added Continue button in start menu
  • added settings to reduce the animation effects (camera rotation and offset) when moving around
  • added Maximum FPS setting
  • removed money for decoration mode
  • added (rudimentary) decorations list to inventory back-end
  • added combat cards to inventory back-end (wip)
  • added setting for inverting the Y axis in Free Look mode
  • added FOV setting
  • improved dialog by letting the user click anywhere to advance
  • improved decoration mode with feedback text explaining why you can't place an object in the dungeon
  • added additional quest descriptions, grouping some of them together
  • added some card combats to the first level
  • added location names to the map (wip)
  • added shortcut Alt + Enter to switch between windowed and fullscreen mode
  • replaced fonts in order to support umlauts
  • replaced some sounds
  • some details (e.g. pipes, posters) and particle effects added to the level
  • added particle effect for unread books in the level
  • added "character portrait" (a broom) for the player during dialog
  • optimized draw calls / performance of demo level
  • added dungeon walls shown in the map
  • replaced art for Odette

The last point is the start for a bigger change - all the character artworks will be replaced with art by Johannes Lott.

As we started full production some time ago, the internal changelist is much longer of course. We're now in the process of building more levels and implementing the full story. And while the gameplay of Mops&Mobs is "complete" feature-wise, every area - combat, decoration mode, dialogues, UI, etc - is still being expanded and polished. There's always a lot to do!

Don't forget to wishlist the game on Steam to support the development and follow us on Mastodon, BlueSky or Discord!
